A little bit about me . . .
My educational trail has taken me from the lushness of rural southeastern Ohio (Gallipolis and Athens), to the beautiful mountains of West Virginia (Morgantown), to the wondrous desert of Arizona (Tucson). A variety of places, experiences, mentors, and friends.
PhD with a major in nursing research and a minor in sociology from the University of Arizona. Check out the home page for the College of Nursing -- a very fine college indeed!
MSN from the School of Nursing at West Virginia University, with another minor in sociology. It was here that I completed the requirements for certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner.
BSN from the School of Nursing in Ohio University's College of Health and Human Services.
Diploma in Nursing from the Holzer Medical Center School of Nursing. Unfortunately, this diploma program was changed to an associate degree program -- but not before I finished!

My program of research has a broad focus on persons' perceptions of and experiences with health, the health care system, formal care providers and other informal caregivers. The recent studies are more narrowly focused on self care and the health care experiences and decision-making of persons with chronic illnesses. Throughout most all of the studies you'll note (1) a focus on the perceptions of the care recipients, (2) the use of qualitative methods, and (3) a concern for cultural issues.
Here are some of my current and recent research studies. I've included those where I am (or have been the) principal investigator, as well as those in which I've played a consultant role. Beneath each study (where applicable), I've also noted the publications and presentations that arose from the study. At the conclusion of this section is a listing of presentations and publications (recent ones) that aren't attached to one of the listed studies. For any titles that are underlined, you can click on it to be taken to additional information about the item.

My practice is two-fold. First is the portion of my practice that relates to my advanced practice role as an Adult Nurse Practitioner. Second is the portion of my practice that relates to the Internet. Both of these practice areas are challenging, yet fulfilling!
Adult Nurse Practitioner Role
Since July, 1993, I have worked as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in the Chronic Cardiac Clinic at the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Enacting this role, I have a primary care clinic that operates 8 hours per week in the Orange Firm of the Ambulatory Care Service at the Memphis VA. All of the veterans enrolled in my clinic have some type of underlying cardiac problem. In the clinic I provide primary care for these veterans, many of whom have complex chronic multisystem diseases.
As one of several advanced practice nurses in the Primary Care Department of the College of Nursing, University of Tennessee, Memphis, I coordinate my efforts of enacting and examining faculty practice with my colleagues. We believe that it is critical to have exemplary faculty practices if we are to be exemplary teachers of advanced practice nurses. Some of the presentations noted below focus on this aspect. Certainly several of the research studies noted in the preceding section focus on issues of relevance to an advanced practice role.
Here are some of the publications and presentations that relate to this advanced nursing practice role.

Internet Practice Role
In the fall of 1993, I was introduced to the potential that the Internet held for educating advanced practice nurses. As sort of a sideline (chuckle), I fell into the role of promoting the Internet in our college's courses. I've also been an active member of the University of Tennessee, Memphis' workgroups for (1) designing a new web page, (2) developing policies and procedures for using the university's web pages, and (3) examining and promoting telemedicine (telehealth, perhaps?) on our campus.
While part of the Internet work that I've done falls into this category, some of it also falls into my teaching activities -- look in both of them if you want to see what I've done related to the Internet.

I teach in numerous courses, while coordinating or having primary responsibility for two courses. The focus of my teaching is two-fold: on advanced practice nursing and on qualitative research methods. I also strive to incorporate the Internet into course activities and have designed some course materials (links below).
Courses as Primary Faculty
FNP 826: Primary Care II: This course is the second of two advanced practice nursing courses focusing on specialization, expansion, and advancement of research-based knowledge and skills related to the advanced practice of nursing in primary care. Emphasis is on the continuing development of a knowledge base necessary for clinical decision-making and the beginning refinements of a model of practice with the family as the unit of service. Needs of families in rural or urban medically underserved areas are important components of the course.
NSG 913: Qualitative Research: This course is designed to provide the student with a firm grounding in qualitative research methodologies and approaches to data analysis and interpretation.
Courses Where I Have Secondary Responsibilities (doing a discussion/lecture or two!)
PHARM 815: Advanced Pharmacology 2 case study sessions on hypertension and cardiovascular content FNP 816: Primary Care I 2 (3 hour) lectures/discussions on hypertension and diabetes mellitus FNP 817: Primary Care I Clinical coordinate student placements at Memphis VAMC and serve as clinical preceptor for students in their primary care rotations during term 2 NSG 822: Research Design 3 hour lecture/discussion on qualitative research methods NSG 823: Physical Diagnosis 2 hour lecture/discussion on differential diagnosis of chest pain FNP 827: Primary Care II Clinical coordinate student placements at Memphis VAMC and serve as clinical preceptor for students in their primary care rotations during term 3 NSG 919: Nursing Science Seminar along with other faculty, participate each semester and offer 1 (1 hour) lecture/discussion each semester NSG 933: Research Seminar along with other faculty, participate each semester the course is offered and lead 1 (2 hour) lecture/discussion Presentations and Publications Related to My Teaching Role
The following reflect presentation or publication of innovative ideas related to education. You'll note that they each have multiple authors -- this is one aspect of the faculty in our College of Nursing that I've found so rewarding . . . everyone's got such great ideas and they're all so willing to share.

Innovative Internet Course Materials
- What follows are some of the course materials that I've created for use on the Internet. While I do much more on the Internet than what these reflect, these are some of the more refined course materials I've developed. I'm really interested in your comments and suggestions for improving them.
Russell, C.K., & Geraci, S. (originally created 1996; significant revision 1998). Differential Diagnosis of Chest Pain. WWW presentation for advanced practice nursing students and others to learn differential diagnosis of chest pain. Now refined for CE presentation and conducted on-line using Blackboard course delivery software. Contact me if you would like to have a preview of the course.
Russell, C.K. (1998). Self-Assessment Pharmacology Case Studies. WWW site for case study presentation and self-assessment quizzes on advanced practice pharmacology content for angina, hypertension, and heart failure.
- URL: contact me if you're interested in reviewing these
Russell, C.K. (1998). Qualitative Research. WWW site for course materials for doctoral students' qualitative research course. Now being taught through the use of "Blackboard" -- a system for on-line course delivery. Contact me if you would like to have a look at the materials.
