Dr. Wake is a native of Tennessee who received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He earned his medical degree from The University of Tennessee, Memphis. He served his internship in general surgery and completed a residency in urology at The University of Tennessee, Memphis. He is board certified in Urology and began his academic career in the Department of Urology, University of Tennessee in July 1990. Since that time he has been instrumental in not only creating, but also developing endourology and laparoscopic urology at The University of Tennessee. He has also led the way in the development of minimally invasive surgery for female urinary incontinence, prostate cancer, complicated renal stone disease, and benign diseases of the prostate.
Dr. Wake currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, Tennessee.  He completed his Medical School at the University of Tennessee (UT) in 1985 where he received the honor of being elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) medical society.  He then completed his Urology residency at the University of Tennessee (UT) in 1990.  After this residency, he joined the faculty at UT and began working his way through the ranks from junior faculty to Vice-Chairman and Program Director to his current position as Chair of the Department.  This leadership position gives him the responsibility for the education and training of Urology residents including introducing them to the latest research and technology.  He does a wide array of urology, but has a special interest in the treatment of prostate cancer to include Targeted Cryoablation of the Prostate (TCAP) and High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU).

He was responsible for bringing (TCAP) to Memphis, Tennessee in 1993 and not only has trained over 40 residents in the technique, but also serves as a proctor for training other urologists locally and throughout the United States.

He first became aware of HIFU several years ago from articles in major urologic journals concerning its use in treatment of prostate disease.  In the last 6 months, he had the opportunity to experience it first hand at a training session conducted in Mexico by Dr. George Suarez.  He was impressed with the minimally invasive nature of the procedure with the rapid recovery of the patients, even less invasive than TCAP.   He is excited about the possibility of bringing this technology to the United States through properly conducted clinical trials which would allow the merit of this treatment to be demonstrated to the academic and clinical urology community.

Dr. Wake's dedication to resident education and training is unsurpassed and his appointment as Program Director, Vice-Chairman and now Chairman of the Department of Urology attests to this fact.
