Dr. Steiner received his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from The University of Tennessee, Memphis. He served his internship in general surgery and a residency in urology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Steiner has been engaged in prostate cancer research since 1988. He performed an 18-month molecular biology postdoctoral fellowship under Dr. Donald Coffey and Evelyn Barrack studying the role of TGFB in prostate cancer from 1988-1990. Dr. Steiner became an American Foundation for Urologic Disease Scholar with Dr. Harold Moses at Vanderbilt University investigating the role of peptide growth factors in prostate cancer. Dr. Steiner became Assistant Professor of Cell Biology, Urology, and Pathology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN in 1992-1995.

 

Dr. Steiner joined the Department of Urology at The University of Tennessee, Memphis as Director of Urologic Oncology and Research, and Associate Professor of Urology and Pharmacology in 1995. Dr. Steiner's research focused on chemoprevention of prostate cancer, the role of peptide growth factor in benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer gene discovery, and prostate cancer gene therapy. In 1999 Dr. Steiner became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Raines-Cox Urology Institute, Memphis, Tennessee which focuses on developing testable strategies in the treatment of patients with genitourinary malignancies. Dr. Steiner is the principal investigator of numerous human clinical trials to evaluate chemoprevention and prostate cancer gene therapy. Based on detailed anatomic dissections, Dr. Steiner has developed the continence preserving anatomic radical prostatectomy. He is on the editorial board of Gene Therapy and Molecular Biology, section editor on Current Opinions in Urology, and Research Editor for the World Journal of Urology. Dr. Steiner serves on study sections for the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and American Cancer Society. Dr. Steiner is a Fellow of the American College Department of Urology Faculty of Surgeons. He has authored over 200 abstracts and publications. Dr. Steiner is certified by the American Board of Urology.
