Frequently Asked Questions

Can I access this telehealth network over the internet?

No. The UTHSC Outreach Center is a network of hospitals connected via secure, dedicated T1 lines, that are not open to public access. If you would like to attend a Telehealth conference or receive a consultation, you will have to travel to the nearest location and access the system through their equipment. If you are interested in attending a conference, please call your local telehealth location in advance to reserve a spot. If you are interested in requesting a consultation, please discuss the medical issue with your Primary Care Physician and have them call us for an appointment with the appropriate specialist.

Do I need a referral to access a specialist through this telehealth network?

Yes. All of our telehealth units are located in rural hospitals, health clinics, health departments, or state-run facilities across the Mid-South and operated by clinicians on staff at those locations. All telemedicine consults of a non-emergency nature are set-up by appointment, and those appointments need to be made by a referring clinician. However, your primary care provider can call our office at (901) 448-1474 to arrange for a specialty consultation. Depending upon your history, they will likely not need to be present during your appointment.

What hours are available for telehealth consults?

Consultations on a non-emergency nature are scheduled and will depend upon the clinic hours of the specialist, but will typically fall in the Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm range. Please visit our list of Medical Services available for more details and specific information on scheduling a consultation.

I need a consultation for a medical specialty that I don't see listed in your list of services. Is it possible to request consults in other areas?

Through the cooperative arrangement with Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, the Regional Medical Center of Memphis, and the University of Tennessee's Health Science Center, we have access to almost every medical subspecialty available in Memphis. Some specialties have not formally joined our organization, however we may be able to bring in a specialist to meet infrequent requests on an as-needed basis. If you would like to access a specialist not on our list, please contact someone from our program and every effort will be made to accomodate you.

I am interested in the distance education portion of your program and have a topic I would love to see offered. Can I request that?

Certainly! The distance education program is designed to support the continuing medical educational needs of clinicians and local residents alike. While some topics are geared more toward the medical professional, others will be of a more general nature and open to the public. If you have a topic you would like to see addressed, please contact Nicole Smithson (nhansen@utmem.edu) and we will try to accommodate your needs. Likewise, if you are a medical professional and have a topic to present appropriate to this forum and would like to contribute, please contact us for more information.
