Who may participate in the Women in Surgery Interest Group?
Any M-1, M-2, M-3, M-4 student interested in pursuing a surgical-based specialty or current surgical resident in the UT system.

What is our focus?
The Women in Surgery Interest Group is designed to meet the professional and personal needs of women at various stages in their surgical career development - beginning with medical school education and continuing through residency and beyond.

Why is this needed?
An association with this unique focus will provide opportunities, both formal and informal, to facilitate interaction among medical students, residents, and professionally accomplished women surgeons. It is our goal, that through this format, your interests, concerns and common experiences, both professional and personal, will be effectively addressed.

UT's College of Medicine is home to a tremendous wealth of women surgeons that inspire, encourage, and promote professional growth as they model these attributes in their daily practice of medicine. As students and residents, we have a unique window of opportunity to build relationships with these women as we observe their example of excellence in medicine.

Although growing annually, women in surgery remains a small family making it crucial for us to encourage, educate, and support one another in this process. The following statistics, as reported by the AMA, represent the distribution of women surgeons for the year 2000:

Additional Information for Women in Surgery:

Association of Women Surgeons (AWS)

Westmont, IL 60559

www.womensurgeons.org

  • AWS is an outstanding organization which offers affordable student memberships for $10.00 annually.

  • One of AWS' greatest resources is The Pocket Mentor which is available on-line in addition to paperback. Although directed to surgical residents, there are many helpful suggestions and recommendations for students during their surgical clerkship. The Pocket Mentor is available at no cost; a "must-have" for your surgical resources.

  • AWS in conjunction with the NIH has produced a video featuring women surgeons both professionally and personally. The target audience for this video is 9 to 14-year-old girls in order to engage their interest and expand their career options in the biomedical sciences. An excellent resource for career days, student career counseling, or community service/educational programs.
