General Surgery
Timothy C. Fabian, M.D., Division Chief
The sheer volume of hospitals and patients guarantee an outstanding experience
in the management of the surgical patient. Whether the patient is suffering
from cancer, vascular disease, an endocrine disorder, a hernia, or any
other surgical disease, the surgical resident will learn the preoperative,
operative, and postoperative care for the patient. Consultation of other
services is performed when appropriate, not as a matter of routine. Operative
management is based on graded responsibility with numerous cases available
for all postgraduate levels. An increasing number of cases are performed
laparoscopically as more expertise is gained with the more complex cases,
such as splenectomy, adrenalectomy, and operation for gastroesophageal
reflux disease. In short, due to the extensive clinical volume, the surgical
resident will be able to handle virtually any patient management problem
when their residency is completed.
