Department of Surgery

The Harwell Wilson Surgical Society, formed in 1974, is named for Harwell Wilson, MD. Dr. Wilson was the Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1948 to 1974. The Society is composed of all surgical faculty and those who completed their surgical training at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The society meets every year in conjunction with the General Surgery Update, which is sponsored by the Department of Surgery. At the HWSS meeting, current residents present their most recent research projects, and a visiting Distinguished Professor then addresses the Society. It is a weekend for members to return to Memphis to learn about the latest management of various surgical illnesses, hear about exciting new research, and visit with old friends. A good time is had by all.
