Welcome to the UT Saint Francis Family Medicine Center
The care of the ambulatory
patient is the cornerstone of Family Medicine, a specialty defined by its
comprehensive and continuous patient care. Much of the family physician's
training occurs in the office setting. The Family Practice Center (FPC)
provides our residents with many learning opportunities in ambulatory care and
preventive medicine. During their three years of training, residents
develop their own patient population. An increased emphasis is placed on
the educational opportunities in the office setting during the 2nd and 3rd years
of residency.
Under faculty supervision, the residents provide care for patients of all
socioeconomic and age levels. It is in this setting that they master
outpatient management of common problems, such as hypertension and diabetes, as
well as providing pregnancy and well-child care. By the end of their
training, our Family Practice residents are capable of managing most patient
problems seen in the office setting.
The FPC is a model practice. It is a modern facility, built in 1991,
specifically for the residency program. There are 24 patient rooms, a
state-of-the-art procedure suite, a large waiting area, as well as faculty and resident
offices. The clinic has on-site management,
and medical records.
A variety of advanced procedural skills are performed in the office.
The procedure suite is equipped to perform upper and lower GI endoscopy, pelvic
and abdominal ultrasound, colposcopy (including cryotherapy and LEEP), exercise
treadmills, and pulmonary function testing. Each procedure room has remote
audio and video capabilities that allow residents in the video conference room
to learn from the procedure.
Residents participate in the management of the clinic through an active
clinic committee. They are involved in hiring and evaluation of office
personnel and develop strong relationships with the nurses
and clinic staff.
