Benefits

Stipends

The base salaries for all residents are competitive with those offered by other programs in the Southeastern United States. 

PGY-1     $43,260

PGY-2     $44,805

PGY-3     $46,350

Residents will receive an additional $540 per year for disability and life insurance benefits.

Vacation

Each resident will be entitled to schedule annual paid vacation according to the following schedule.  Vacation days are to scheduled in advance and approved by  the Chief residents and Program Director

PGY-1     10 days

PGY-2     15 days

PGY-3     15 days

Medical Education Allowance

All residents receive an educational  allowance that they can use to purchase medical books, PDAs, and computer software.  The money can also be used to pay for the USMLE Step 3 and certification courses, such as PALS and ATLS.  Each 2nd and 3rd year resident is allowed  authorized leave time for the purpose of attending one medical education meeting during each of those years of residency.  .  Attendance requires the prior approval of the program director and is contingent on patient care responsibilities and available funds.  Reimbursement for travel and expenses will be made according to the University's policies and procedures for such.  

Authorized leave and financial support is as follows:

         1st Year          0 days           $800

         2nd Year          4 days          $1,000

         3rd Year          5 days          $1,100

 

Insurance

Health insurance for either single or your entire family is offered through Cigna Health Insurance.

Life insurance is provided by University of Tennessee at no cost to the resident.

Disability insurance of $1,000 per month, after a 90 day waiting period, is included in the insurance package.

Professional liability insurance for physicians while in residency training is covered by the State Claims Commission.  The policy does not cover the resident for activities outside of the training program, i.e., moonlighting.

Uniforms

The Residency Program  provides an annual uniform allowance of 6 coats for the first year and up to 3 each for the second and third years.

  Parking

Residents are allowed to park in the covered garage adjacent to the hospital.

Food

Residents receive a card that grants them access to the Physician's lounge where meals are provided daily.  In addition the on-call residents may eat in the hospital cafeteria.

Athletic Facilities

A fitness center operated by the YMCA is located in the hospital and is available to residents for a minimal fee.

Moving Allowance

Residents moving to Memphis from outside of the area may be reimbursed for up to $2,500 of moving expenses.
