St. Francis Family Medicine Residency
Welcome to the University of Tennessee, Saint Francis Family Medicine website! I think it is best to introduce you to our program by describing what we do! With that thought in mind, I wanted to let you know what a recent call night entailed for me and the night float team:
- One of my Family Medicine colleagues had just delivered an office patient before I started my call night.
- I took over both inpatient and OB services at 5:00 p.m. and helped welcome a laboring patient who had no prenatal care to the floor. She was found to have cocaine and marijuana in her system. Our Family Medicine team managed her and her newborn’s care after delivery.
- During the ensuing hours, the night float team (made up of an intern and an upper level resident) actively managed another office patient’s labor and delivery.
- We also admitted a man to the hospital with pneumonia, which was complicated by HIV, herpes infection, and cardiomyopathy.
- Between his admission and the morning, we helped deliver another woman with no prenatal care who spoke only Spanish, and
- We admitted a young woman with vaginal bleeding who needed a blood transfusion and hormone therapy to control her bleeding.
- After holding rounds with the morning obstetrical team, I was able to make it to my 5-year-old son’s school in time to read a story to his kindergarten class.
This was my recent experience over 12 hours – by no means an exceptional experience! I have highlighted this call night to give a glimpse of what our unopposed program offers. Not only do we take care of a variety of patients with varying complex medical and social situations, but our family physicians and obstetricians provide excellent support and an environment where you can develop your own personal interests. Several of our family physicians perform C-sections, and we have primary teaching and back up from OB/Gyn faculty.
While this experience emphasized the hospital side of the residency, in the clinic you will have excellent opportunities to interact with clinical pharmacists, pharmacy residents, and pharmacy and medical students; perform ultrasounds under the guidance of various faculty; learn EGDs and colonoscopies in the office by family physicians (this week we diagnosed a colon cancer) ; and understand the fundamentals of the business of medicine with auxiliary staff who are here to help support your training.
One of our newest goals is to refocus our international health education by working with Shoulder-to-Shoulder, a not-for-profit international organization which I worked with while training in Cincinnati.
Now that I’ve peaked your interest, I would encourage you to . . . .
Call, come visit, or send an email and let us show you how we can partner together to develop your skills and interest in family medicine. We also have an M4 elective available if you can fit it into your schedule.
