Meet the Safety Officer
John Bossier
John Bossier was appointed as Safety Officer for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in May, 2004. As head of the Safety
Affairs Department, he has oversight and responsibility for developing, maintaining, and promoting policies, procedures, and programs
necessary to promote a safe and healthy campus environment.
John supervises an eight-person staff, which coordinates the campus radiation material, waste management, fire prevention, pollution
control, and laboratory safety programs. His department works with other campus and external entities to protect the University against
losses; and works with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local health, safety, and
environmental laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
Prior to his tenure at UTHSC, John was environmental and quality control manager for a major chemical manufacturing facility for
eight years where he managed the facility’s environmental activities. Overall, he has more than twenty-five years of experience in
the environmental, health and safety field.
John has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. Professionally, he is affiliated with the
Memphis and Shelby County Emergency Planning Committee, the Memphis Chemical Association, and the Shelby County Chapter of the
Association of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. In his spare time, he volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and local
schools as a tutor and mentor.
