The Charles Louis Davis, DVM Foundation offers "video tutorials" on lab animal diseases
The Charles Louis Davis, DVM Foundationhas developed a series of video tutorials covering a wide range of topics. E-mail cldavisdvm@earthlink.net for availability
Canine Use
"Working with the Laboratory Dog"
"Working with the Laboratory Dog," a new video produced by the VA and the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, helps meet the training mandates for research staff using dogs in biomedical research, and can be viewed on the OLAW Web site (Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare). Visit http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/TrainingVideos.htm . Or, request a free CD of this video by contacting OLAW at: olaw@od.nih.gov.
Primate Training
“Working with Primates” http://www.grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/TrainingVideos.htm deals with the care and handling of nonhuman primates in biomedical research.
B. Animal Care and Use Programs
AAALAC International www.aaalac.org
The AAALAC International Council on Accreditation has adopted a new "Reference Resource" that will be used as a benchmark for evaluating animal care and use programs. The first new resource offers guidelines for humane endpoints in safety experiments and is titled, "Guidance document on the recognition, assessment, and use of clinical signs as humane endpoints for experimental animals used in safety evaluation."
C. Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)
Public Health Service Policy on the use of laboratory animals: www.grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/references/phspol.htm
The Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (The Guide) PDF version can be viewed at:
http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=5140
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee Guidebook may be found at:
www.grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/GuideBook.pdf.
The addendum to the guidebook can be downloaded or viewed from www.grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/Guide_addendum.pdf
All investigators are encouraged to take the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare Tutorial on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. This tutorial can be done at your convenience and offers good practice and training for the care and use of laboratory animals. It can be accessed at www.grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/tutorial/index.htm.
A PDF version of the Animal Welfare Act can be found at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/index.shtml
D. Behavioral Studies
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have released a report entitled Methods and Welfare Considerations in Behavioral Research with Animals. The handbook was created to assist the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in evaluating protocols that employ various means to manipulate the behavior of laboratory animals.

F. Animal Alternatives – Training and Information
A web resource to help in the identification and development of alternative methods for testing: http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/altbib.html
http://altweb.jhsph.edu/ is a site dedicated to the 3Rs of research – refinement, reduction and replacement. This is also a good site to look for investigator training sessions, and upcoming scientific meetings.
Another site dedicated to the 3Rs of research that allows a literature search much like Medline is: http://www.nal.usda.gov/awic/alternatives/alternativeanimalusethesaurus.htm
The John Hopkins Center for Alternatives is a good resource for available methodologies, small grants and upcoming meetings: http://caat.jhsph.edu/
The Specialized Information Services (SIS) Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has recently released a new online bibliographic database for alternative methods in biomedical research and toxicology testing. "ALTBIB" seeks to assist in identifying methods and techniques helpful in supporting the development, validation and implementation of alternatives to live vertebrate use in research and testing. To access ALTBIB, visit: http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/altbib.html.
