B. Animal Care and Use Programs

AAALAC International www.aaalac.org
The AAALAC International Council on Accreditation has adopted a new "Reference Resource" that will be used as a benchmark for evaluating animal care and use programs. The first new resource offers guidelines for humane endpoints in safety experiments and is titled, "Guidance document on the recognition, assessment, and use of clinical signs as humane endpoints for experimental animals used in safety evaluation."

This tutorial can be done at your convenience and offers good practice and training for the care and use of laboratory animals. D. Behavioral Studies

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have released a report entitled Methods and Welfare Considerations in Behavioral Research with Animals. The handbook was created to assist the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in evaluating protocols that employ various means to manipulate the behavior of laboratory animals.

The Specialized Information Services (SIS) Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has recently released a new online bibliographic database for alternative methods in biomedical research and toxicology testing. "ALTBIB" seeks to assist in identifying methods and techniques helpful in supporting the development, validation and implementation of alternatives to live vertebrate use in research and testing.
