Contact:

Sir Ronald Fisher, a pioneering British geneticist and statistician, gave the following advice, which rings even truer today than when he gave it at the Indian Statistical Congress in 1938:

"To call in the statistician after the experiment is done may be no more than asking him to perform a post-mortem examination: he may be able to say what the experiment died of."

Experimental Design

Before you begin any research, it is best to think through what exactly you are trying to find and how the data should be collected so that you can draw valid conclusions from your study. Most of our faculty have extensive training in experimental design, and collaborating or consulting with us during the project's development can save a lot of work and heartache later.

Statistical Services

Once the data are in, you may want expert help in figuring out what it all really means. Over two thirds of published medical studies are either analyzed incorrectly (using the wrong tests) or show misinterpretations of the statistics used. Don't make the mistake of using inappropriate tests to analyze data and possibly misinterpreting your data. In the Department of Preventive Medicine, we have experienced statisticians who can offer useful advice. Consider contacting us during the planning phase of your research study to get the most bang for your research bucks.
