Health Care Heroes:

University Distinguished Professor Emeritus John W. Runyan, Jr., M.D., received the Lifetime Achievement Award on September 9, 2004, in the Health Care Heroes Awards competition sponsored by the Memphis Business Journal. Moreover, Dr. Runyan was named the State of Tennessee's 2005 Distinguished Physician of the Year by the Tennessee Medical Association.

Phyllis Richey, Ph.D., assistant professor of preventive medicine, was honored as a finalist in the Community Outreach category of the 2004 Health Care Heroes Awards competition. The Community Outreach category honors an organization or individual for development of a program that improves access to health care in underserved areas and improves the quality of health care in such areas.

Tai Chi for Arthritis Program available at UT:

Tai Chi originated in ancient China and is practiced for its health benefits throughout the world by people of all ages. Slow, gentle and relaxed movements are combined with focused and deep breathing. It can be done standing or sitting by just about anyone in any location.
