Salaries and Benefits

UT Pediatrics and Med/Peds Resident Salaries (2006-2007)

  • PGY-1: Annual Base - $42,540
  • PGY-2: Annual Base - $44,040
  • PGY-3: Annual Base - $45,540
  • PGY-4: Annual Base - $47,040

This represents an increase of 3% to the current PGY 1 level and maintains the historic differences between levels ($1,500 between PGY levels).

In addition to the base salary, each resident currently receives an additional $540 per year for disability and life insurance benefits.

Vacation

  • PGY-1: 2 Weeks Vacation
  • PGY-2: 3 Weeks Vacation
  • PGY-3: 3 Weeks Vacation
  • PGY-4: 3 Weeks Vacation

All Interns take 6/24-6/30 as unpaid vacation (they start on 6/23 of the preceding year).
All residents have an additional six days off over the Christmas/New Year’s holidays.

Conferences and Interviews

  • PGY-1: no additional days allowed
  • PGY-2: 5 additional days allowed for interviews
  • PGY-3: 5 additional days allowed for interviews, plus 7 days for one major national conference during either PGY-3 or PGY-4
  • PGY-4: 5 additional days allowed for interviews, plus 7 days for one major national conference during either PGY-3 or PGY-4

Uniforms

  • Six white coats provided by the program, embroidered with the resident’s name
  • Four scrub suits provided by the program, with replacements yearly as needed.

Pagers: All residents receive an alpha-numeric pager, retained for the duration of their residency.

Meals: Money for meals is provided through a debit system put on the residents ID badge.

Parking: Controlled access parking garages and lots adjacent to Le Bonheur and St. Jude are issued to all residents at no cost.

On-Call Rooms: Individual on-call rooms are provided for each resident, in each hospital.

Insurance:

  • LIFE: Life insurance in the amount of $32,500, with a double indemnity clause for accidental death or dismemberment, is provided.
  • HEALTH: Residents, their spouses and dependent minor children are provided with a major medical policy, with a lifetime benefit of $1 million. For individual coverage, the resident pays $20/month. For family coverage, the resident pays $78/month. For benefits, there is a $250 deductible per person per year, up to a maximum of three family members. The plan provides for a co-pay and prescription card. There is no waiting period for maternity coverage. One hundred percent coverage with no deductible is provided for outpatient surgery and pre-admission testing. Outpatient psychiatric service coverage is 50% of costs, up to $50 per visit. Inpatient psychiatric coverage has a $20,000 per year limitation.
  • SALARY AND BENEFITS DISABILITY: UT provides disability coverage which may include complications of pregnancy and provides a minimum or $1,000/month in long-term disability, up to age 65. Coverage begins 90 days after the disability occurs. In most cases, the residency program will pay the salary of a resident who is unable to work because of illness or accident until the disability insurance takes effect. Residents may purchase additional coverage at a discounted rate.
  • MALPRACTICE: Liability coverage is provided by the State of Tennessee as a result of the Tennessee Claims Commission Act of 1985. Residents have absolute immunity, with the state acting as litigant on their behalf in any malpractice suit.

Maternity Leave:

Maternity Leave Residents are given up to three months of maternity leave without loss of status in the program. They may use the 21 working day, non-cumulative sick leave, vacation time, and a pre-arranged elective without night or weekend call for maternity leave. If a total of more than three months of maternity leave is needed during the 36-month residency, the resident will need to consult with the Program Director regarding the amount of additional program training time required to fulfill the American Board of Pediatrics requirement of 33 months of training.

Paternity Leave:

Residents may take up to an annual 21 working days of non-cumulative sick leave for the birth of a child. Because resident coverage must be prearranged, this leave should be planned with the Program Director and Chief Resident as far ahead as possible so that the anticipated birth of the child can be arranged to occur during an elective rotation.

Day Care Facility:

The University of Tennessee ChildCare Program is located on the first floor of the Boling Center, just two blocks from Le Bonheur. The program can accommodate 20 infants, ages 6 weeks to 12 months, and approximately 60 children, ages 12 months to 5 years. The facility is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and parents are strongly encouraged to drop in anytime. A comfortable, private room is provided for nursing mothers.

Academy Membership:

A free membership in the American Academy of Pediatrics entitles residents to a copy of the most recent Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (the Redbook), subscriptions to Pediatrics, Pediatrics In Review and The AAP News and membership in the Resident Section of the AAP.

Education Stipend:

An Education Stipend of $400 per year is provided for Pediatric and Medicine/Pediatric residents for the purchase of textbooks, journal subscriptions or educational software.

Professional Meeting:

Senior residents at the Pediatric PL-3 or Medicine/Pediatric PL-4 level may attend one major national meeting for up to seven days. Expenses are reimbursed, up to $1,000. The time spent at the meeting is not considered vacation time.

Retreats:

  • PL-1 Retreat: Resident coverage and expenses are provided for interns and their families to attend an overnight fall retreat.
  • PL-2 Retreat: Resident coverage and expenses are provided for a PL-2 retreat each spring.

Recreational Facilities:

Le Bonheur has a YMCA exercise facility open for membership with a reduced rate to all employees on the 4th floor of the Physicians Office Building.

The University of Tennessee Alumni Student Center is located two blocks from Le Bonheur. The facility includes basketball and racquetball courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and hot tub, fully equipped exercise and weight rooms, a cafeteria, pizzeria/snack bar with a large screen television, the University Bookstore, lounges with televisions, conference rooms, automatic banking facilities and a post office. Exercise, dance and aerobic classes, as well as many intramural sports, are offered. Tennis courts and softball fields are also available. The membership fee for use of the athletic facilities is less than $20, and is payroll deductible. Tickets to many sports and cultural events are also available at reduced rates.

Miscellaneous Benefits:

  • Unlimited photocopying privileges in the Le Bonheur library and Resident Education area.
  • Free literature computer searches through the Le Bonheur, St. Jude and University of Tennessee libraries.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course and Certification, as part of the orientation program. The Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) Course is provided during the NICU rotation.
  • Hepatitis B, rubella, PPD and VZV screening. Hep A, varicella, Hep B, influenza and measles vaccines if needed, at no cost.
  • Discounts on computer hardware and software.
  • In-state tuition at the University of Memphis. Spouses are eligible for in-state tuition within six months-1 year of arrival.
  • Two resident lounges with television, refrigerator, microwave oven, hospital and university computers with modem access to literature searches are provided.
  • A Tennessee medical license is not required for residency-related activities. An institutional permit covers residents.
