Deborah P. Jones, M.D., M.S.
Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. Deborah Jones completed her pediatric nephrology fellowship at UTHSC in 1989 and was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the UTHSC the same year. As a junior faculty member she continued her basic research related to amino acid transport in renal tubular cell lines with extramural support from an American Heart Association Clinical Scientist award.

In 1995 her focus changed from laboratory investigation to the clinical practice of pediatric nephrology and teaching. Among her routine lectures are fluid and electrolyte therapy, renal physiology and pathophysiology as part of the renal module for second year medical students. Her clinical interests include dialysis, tubular disorders, acute renal failure, bone and mineral disorders, and oncologic nephrology. She has co-authored chapters on tubular function and acute renal failure.

More recently, Dr. Jones has developed an interest in ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) as a tool to study mechanisms and natural history of hypertension in children. Dr. Jones’ clinical research project, “End organ damage in children with chronic hypertension” is funded by the NHLBI. Dr. Jones has been the center principal investigator or principal physician investigator on nine industry sponsored studies on safety and efficacy of anti-hypertensive medications in children. She is the center principal investigator for the NIH sponsored Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKID) study.
She is also a member of the Urinary Tract Task Force for the Late Effects Committee of the Children's Oncology Group.

In 2006 Dr. Jones was awarded the M.S. in epidemiology degree by the University of Tennessee College of Graduate Health Sciences.

Dr. Jones serves as Medical Director of the Dialysis program at the LBCMC and she serves as mentor for clinical research related to pediatric dialysis, in addition to general pediatric nephrology.
