During her first year of training, her clinical research project was on Thymoglobulin induction therapy for high-risk pediatric renal allograft recipients. She presented the findings of this project at a poster session the 2005 meeting of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology/Pediatric Academic Societies - Hastings MC, Jones DP, Wyatt RJ, Ault BH: Thymoglobulin induction for cadaveric renal transplantation in African American children.

During his first year of training, his clinical research project was on clinical features and outcome of pediatric IgA nephropathy. He presented the findings of this project at a poster session the 2004 meeting of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology/Pediatric Academic Societies and published the results in Clinical Nephrology
During his second and third year of fellowship, Dr. Lau has worked in the laboratory of Dr. Hiroko Nishimura in the UTHSC Department of Physiology on the ontogeny of aquaporin 2 expression in quail kidney. In April 2005, Dr. Lau presented a poster, Lau K, Yang Y, Thomason D, Wyatt R, Nishimura H: Differential increase in the mammalian type nephrons in avian kidney at the annual meeting of the Federation of Societies of Experimental Biology in San Diego.
