  • cytogenetics
  • immunology
  • laboratory management
  • informatics

  • molecular diagnosis

The more than 75 pathologists who are involved in this residency program provide a great depth and breadth to the residency experience. In addition to a variety of clinical research efforts, the University department has a strong basic research program with emphases in cancer pathobiology, cytokine biology and vascular biology. There is also a Ph D. program in Pathology operated co jointly with departments at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Appointments

Three or four residents are accepted each year for a total of 12-16 residents in the first four years of training.  Fellowships in dermatopathology, anatomic pathology, hematopathology, and pediatric pathology are available.  Other fellowships are under active consideration.

Facilities The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is one of the largest in the country. Within the medical center, rotations are taken at UT Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Baptist Memorial Hospital, Trumbull Laboratory - Pathology Group of the Mid South, the Regional Medical Center (MED), the Veterans' Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (the world's leading children's cancer center), Memphis Pathology Laboratory (MPL), LeBonheur Children's Medical Center, GI Pathology Partners, Methodist University Hospital and Duckworth Pathology Group. Approximate numbers of autopsies and specimens are: 200 hospital autopsies, 500 forensic autopsies, 250,000 surgical pathology cases, 6,000 frozen sections, 400,000 cytopathology specimens, 5,000 bone marrows and 10,000,000 clinical laboratory determinations. Research

The residency program in Pathology provides residents with a rich and diversified research opportunity. Residents are able to choose a mentor from faculty with research expertise and a common interest in residency education from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center along with neighboring affiliated institutions including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Veterans' Affairs Medical Center.

This innovative research experience enables residents to receive cutting-edge training in biomedicine and biotechnology with our world-renowned faculty at UT and its affiliated institutions, and involves a melding of faculty in both basic science and clinical departments. Residents emerge from this program as highly competitive biomedical scientists ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century.

Research is focused on human health-related problems such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, drug addiction and other mental health-related diseases, neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, multiple sclerosis, etc), infectious diseases, and other catastrophic diseases.

Specific areas of research include:

Hematopoiesis Cellular immunology
Genomics and proteomics Cytokine receptors and transcription factors
Wound healing Molecular basis of infectious diseases
Coagulation disease Vaccine development
Genetic disorder

Each resident is encouraged to participate in an activity characterized by scholarly pursuit leading to an invitation to a national scientific meeting.

Stipends and Benefits

First year residents receive approximately $43,260 with a $1,545 dollar increase each year thereafter. All residents are provided with subsidized hospitalization, life and disability insurance, liability protection, and parking. The program also provides time off for courses to prepare for board examinations and some financial assistance in the purchase of books.
