Biography:

Dr. Zafar received his M.B, B.S (M.D.) from Dow Medical College (Dow University of Health Sciences) Karachi, Pakistan. He started his residency in Pathology at University of Texas at Houston in 1992 and moved to Memphis in 1993 to continue his residency in Pathology at University of Tennessee at Memphis-Baptist Memorial Hospital training program. After successfully completing his residency, he continued on as Cytopathology fellow and subsequently received board certification from American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology. Dr. Zafar pursued a second fellowship at University of Iowa in Hematology (2001-2002) and received his board certification in Hematology from American Board of Pathology in 2004.

Dr. Zafar joined UT Memphis as an Assistant Professor in 2003 and has been an active member of our faculty since. He is the main resource faculty member for Cytopathology and Hematology, is the Associate Training Program Director and Clinical Director for the School of Cytotechnology in the School of Allied Health Sciences. He represents Pathology in the University Faculty Senate.

Interests:  

His research interests revolve around Human Papilloma Virus as it impacts various body sites (particularly female genital tract) and also Pathology education and training. Dr. Zafar is involved in several community-based charitable projects within US and overseas.
