Biography: Dr. Stevens began his medical career in 1971 when he was employed by Duckworth Pathology Group as Technical Director of Chemistry. His primary responsibilities included quality control, quality assurance, method development, instrumentation, and reagent and media preparation for the large clinical laboratory of Methodist Hospital of Memphis. His responsibilities soon expanded to all other sections of the clinical laboratory. During his years with DPG, Dr. Stevens developed the sections of Diagnostic Immunology and Toxicology as both were emerging as new disciplines in the clinical laboratory. Other responsibilities included supervision of the phlebotomy team, specimen processing and the laboratory information system. In 1979 Baptist Memorial Hospital of Memphis, employed him to develop a new toxicology lab for their hospital. Procedures were developed for rapid screening of abused and overdosed drugs found in the Emergency Room setting and their therapeutic drug monitoring program. He was promoted to laboratory manager in 1984 and was responsible for reorganizing the lab structure and developing an outreach program. By 1986 all of the labs were consolidated into a rapid service facility (BMH), a core lab (BRL), and an out reach laboratory (MPL). This model was subsequently copied by other hospital systems throughout the country. For the next 13 years he was the chief operating officer of the core and outreach labs. In 1999 he became the director of Operations for the UT Medical Group and was appointed to be the Business Manager for both the UT Department of Pathology and the Regional Forensic Center. Additionally, Dr. Stevens has volunteer faculty appointments in both Pathology and Allied Health. Research and Teaching: Dr. Stevens has been an instructor of medical technology at three schools ( Methodist, Baptist, and UT). Areas of interest include Toxicology, Instrumentation, Laboratory Management, Clinical Chemistry, and Quality assurance.
