History
In January of 2000,
the UT College of Medicine launched the Mid-South Telehealth Consortium (MSTC)
to improve access to healthcare and education for underserved, isolated,
and minority communities in the Mid-South. In 2003, MSTC won the
distinction of being named by the Department of Health and Human Services
as the nation’s third largest telehealth program and has continued to hold
this distinction for 2 years. The Center’s ongoing telehealth outreach
projects and their research findings have clearly demonstrated the value of
the Center to the community through effective use of cutting-edge
telehealth and e-health technologies in broadening access and reducing
disparities.
Building on the success of MSTC, the
College of Medicine established The UTHSC Outreach Center in April
2004 by combining three separate and uncoordinated units into a central
organization. The overall objective of this re-organization is to funnel
all UTHSC College of Medicine’s outreach initiatives and projects into
one of three interconnected functional areas.
