Mission Statement: Academic Excellence,
Clinical Competence, Social Commitment
The purpose of this four-year training program is to educate the
resident in the entire breadth of the discipline of obstetrics and
gynecology and to foster a lifelong commitment to the promotion
of women's health care. The resident will acquire cognitive knowledge,
technical skills, and interpersonal skills through didactic lectures,
small group conferences, audiovisual media, individual instruction,
independent reading, and direct patient care. Upon successful completion
of the training program, the resident will be fully prepared for
the general practice of obstetrics and gynecology and for further
training in a subspecialty discipline. The department is firmly
committed to helping each resident recognize their full academic,
clinical, and personal potential within an intellectually stimulating
and emotionally supportive environment.
Evaluation:
Faculty evaluations of the resident's performance are submitted
to the program director after each rotation. The program director
schedules two formal semi-annual evaluation sessions, with
each resident during the course of the academic year. Residents
will submit anonymous evaluations of faculty at the end of each
semester (December and June). Promotion to the next level of progressive
responsibility contingent upon satisfactory performance in all aspects
of the educational program.
Resident Research and Teaching:
Each resident is required to select a research topic for presentation
in the PGY-3 year. Opportunities are available for residents who
elect to participate in one of the ongoing research programs in
the department. Each May, the department sponsors an annual Resident
Research Day Symposium. Papers are presented by each resident in
PGY-3 to the department, friends and family, and a distinguished
visiting professor. Medical students at the third and fourth year
levels rotate regularly through the department. The department is
committed to quality education at all levels, and resident teaching
of medical students is an important educational experience for both
the student and resident. Residents participate in both didactic
and bedside teaching sessions and assist in student evaluation.
Continuing Education and Conferences:
Many aspects of obstetrics and gynecology require additional didactic
work before they can be integrated into the resident's fund of working
knowledge. Resident Didactic Lecture Series: This
weekly didactic conference is coordinated by the Program Director.
The curriculum is based on the Educational Objectives published
by CREOG (Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology).
Grand Rounds: Grand Rounds Lectures are held quarterly.
The Associate Residency Director coordinates the programs and invites
speakers that are known experts in the field of obstetrics and gynecology
and in other fields of medicine, local speakers as well as our own
knowledgeable faculty. Clinical Case Conference and Mortality
and Morbidity Conference: This weekly conference is organized
by the Program Director. On the third Thursday, residents present
two interesting cases for discussion. On the first and third Thursday,
the chief resident on service discusses selected cases from weekly
statistics. Members of other departments such as Pathology, Neonatology,
Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Radiology may participate as
well. Patient care issues, legal and malpractice trends, psychosexual
counseling, evidence-based medicine and departmental quality assurance
issues are discussed at this conference. Faculty and residents are
required to attend. Journal Club: This monthly
conference is held each month at the home of a faculty member or a designated location. The
residents and faculty gather for a discussion of recent literature
and learn to critically evaluate scientific papers.
Each resident becomes a Junior Fellow in the American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) with dues paid by the department.
Junior Fellows receive the journals Obstetrics and Gynecology and
Primary Care Update/or OB/GYNs, as a benefit of membership in ACOG.
Residents also receive the standard Obstetrics and Gynecology textbooks
at the onset of training.
