The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility provides experience
for residents in all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of reproductive
endocrinologic disorders. Residents work side by side with faculty in private
offices located in East Memphis. Each resident sees women with reproductive
endocrine problems that range from pubertal disturbance to menopausal disorders.
Modern management of the infertile couple requires a broad range of contemporary tests. The Division thus emphasizes acquisition of those skills that will be applicable in the practice of every gynecologist. Residents acquire the skills necessary to complete a basic evaluation for the infertile couple including the ability to perform and interpret semen analyses, hysterosalpingograms, and laparoscopies. Each resident is also exposed to the very successful Assisted Reproductive Technology program. Residents learn and assist with transvaginal ultrasonography, hysterosonography and in-office hysteroscopy. Surgical skills taught by members of this Division include diagnostic and operative laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and laser technology. Residents will also be exposed to the principles of tubal reconstruction, and will learn those microsurgical techniques that are applicable to all gynecologic surgery. The broad clinical experience is completed by weekly didactic lectures and conferences that encompass all major topics in reproductive endocrinology. Journal articles are critically reviewed in order to highlight new advances. Active collaboration with endocrinologists in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics provide additional training experiences. An endocrine research laboratory performs immunoassays and is equipped with the latest molecular biology technology. This laboratory is available for investigation by the interested resident. A successful In-Vitro Fertilization program exists with active investigation in a variety of related areas.
