DIVISION OF GYNECOLOGIC SPECIALTIESThe Division of Gynecology seeks to provide each resident with increasing responsibility in preoperative, operative, and postoperative management. The philosophy of the Division is to ensure that each resident learns surgical skills at a pace commensurate with his/her innate talents. Effective supervision ensures the highest quality patient care, while simultaneously allowing acquisition of skills in vaginal and abdominal surgery. The Division has been developed around faculty members with a wide diversity of clinical and research interests. Residents have the opportunity of working closely with staff physicians who have received subspecialty training in Pelvic Surgery, Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Infectious Diseases, and Urogynecology. In addition, faculty with extensive experience and clinical expertise in areas such as chronic pelvic pain, premenstrual syndrome, reconstructive pelvic surgery, and care of the menopausal patient are integral parts of the Gynecology rotations. Gynecologic inpatient training predominately utilizes the Regional Medical Center. All major and minor gynecologic cases in this hospital are managed by residents in conjunction with the full-time faculty. An active private teaching service in the Methodist Hospital System and at Baptist Women’s Hospital provides additional surgical experience, including opportunities to learn novel techniques and approaches of many members of the faculty. Ambulatory care skills are developed in a busy gynecology clinic in which over 8,000 patient visits are logged each year. Further, the concept of continuity of care permits longitudinal follow-up of patients which prepares the resident for independent practice. In addition, residents participate in the staffing of specialty clinics focusing on colposcopy, urogynecology, chronic pelvic pain, pediatric and adolescent gynecology and reproductive concerns of the mentally and physically disabled. Residents also have the unique opportunities of participating in the private office practices of the full time faculty, again allowing focused learning in office gynecology, urogynecology, and pediatric/adolescent gynecology. Pathology training is integrated within the Division of Gynecology. The department has an excellent relationship with the Department of Pathology, and, in fact, houses facilities for Perinatal Pathology. At a weekly colposcopy conference, colposcopic and histologic findings are reviewed to arrive at decisions for patient management. Weekly clinically-oriented conferences help residents critically review current and classic gynecologic literature with regard to contemporary practices. In addition, a weekly patient care conference allows for interactive review of treatment options for all surgical cases performed. The Division offers an accredited three year fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery.
