2006 Runyan Community Nursing Award Recipient
Susan B. Patton, DNSc, APRN, BC, is the recipient of the 2006 John W. Runyan Community Nursing Award.
The award is named in honor of Dr. John W. Runyan, Jr., University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s department of preventative medicine. He is an internationally recognized advocate for the role of nurses in community health care.
The award, established in 1979, is designed to recognize a currently practicing nurse who has made significant contributions to the development and promotion of community health nursing. The setting for community health nursing is principally primary care settings where clients live, work, play, and attend school.
Dr. Susan Patton is a Board Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and proprietor of East Arkansas Children’s Clinic, Forrest City, Arkansas. She serves as Medical Consultant to Kids for the Future, a developmental preschool located in the same city. As a Forensic Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Patton works with victims of abuse and neglect in Forrest City. She has served in professional nursing organizations and was instrumental in pushing legislation through that established prescriptive authority for advanced practice nurses in Arkansas, forever changing the fabric of health care delivery in her Arkansas community.
Dr. Patton stated, “Winning the John Runyan Award is an incredible honor; his work with nurses to improve the health care in communities across the Mid South leaves a legacy that will benefit generations to come”.
Dr. Patton was presented her award at the Tennessee Nurses Association Awards Luncheon on October 13, 2006.
The College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is pleased that Dr. Patton continues the strong tradition of deserving recipients of the Runyan Award.
