Runyan Community Nursing Award Recipient
Mary Katherine Anderson, PhD, MSN, ARPN, BC, is the recipient of the 2005 John W. Runyan Community Nursing Award.
The award is named in honor of Dr. John W. Runyan, Jr., University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s department of preventative medicine. He is an internationally recognized advocate for the role of nurses in community health care.
The award, established in 1979, is designed to recognize a currently practicing nurse who has made significant contributions to the development and promotion of community health nursing. The setting for community health nursing is principally primary care settings where clients live, work, play, and attend school.
Dr. Mary Katherine Anderson is an Associate Professor at the College of Nursing at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). She teaches undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in Family & Community Nursing. She also serves as the Executive Director of the Johnson City Downtown clinic, where she serves as a Nurse Practitioner and oversees operations at the clinic. She is also involved in research in the areas of global health, community health, and family health. Dr. Joellen Edwards, Director of ETSU College of nursing stated, “Dr. Anderson is a community health nurse with a vision and a passion for caring for the underserved, and the energy and practicality to make that vision a reality”.
Dr. Anderson was presented her award at the Tennessee Nurses Association Awards Luncheon on October 21, 2005.
The College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is pleased that Dr. Anderson continues the strong tradition of deserving recipients of the Runyan Award.
