Master of Science in Nursing
The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program . . .
- Is a full-time program of study for individuals holding a BSN.
- MSN Nurse Anesthesia program requires 2 ½ years; all other MSN programs require 1 ½ years.
- Two academic terms per year with each term lasting 20 weeks.
- First two terms consist primarily of core courses, although MSN Nurse Anesthesia core is significantly different than core courses in the other MSN program options.
- Last term or terms focus on courses in the student’s area of concentration, as well as a practicum.
- Practicum experience arranged by student in conjunction with UTHSC faculty member.
- Students typically complete the practicum requirement in the area they currently live.
- Has no thesis requirement.
- Is not available as a part-time program.
Our MSN offerings are of two types: Nurse Anesthesia MSN and other MSN programs.
- Options:
- Nurse Anesthesia MSN program is a 2 ½ year, face-to-face, on-campus academic experience.
- Other MSN programs are primarily online, with a required on-campus component.
- Other MSN Programs:
- Options are designed to offer students flexibility in determining their own living arrangements, schedule of study, and timing of engagement in coursework.
- Students are required to be on campus four times yearly, at the start and end of each term.
- Each on-campus time is typically one week (Monday-Friday).
- On-campus time is for face-to-face meetings, classes, exams, seminars, discussion groups, etc.
- On-campus schedules will vary from term to term depending on classes and option/specialization.

Note:
- Beginning in July 2009, the current group of MSN advanced practice programs will be moved to the Doctor of Nursing Practice level.
- That is, the MSN class beginning in 2008 will be the last entering advanced practice MSN class at the UTHSC.
