3rd Annual Forensic Nursing Conference
Collaborative Respense to Violence

— ABOUT THE CONFERENCE —

The Psychiatric and Forensic Doctor of Nursing Programs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Nursing recognize students, graduates and other professionals need to increase their knowledge and expertise in collaborating with other health professionals in order to provide mental health and psychiatric care to the forensic populations and victims of crime and to promote awareness of systems that might prevent violence in the community.

This program is designed to include lecture discussion and a panel response at the conclusion of the program. Content of the program includes the prevalence of psychiatric disorders within the incarcerated population, experiences with the incarcerated population, assessments, and intervention and prevention strategies. Speakers include nurses who hold leadership positions in nursing education and have completed research in the forensic population.

Nurses who have practiced in these settings will share their experiences with the population that they serve which includes women and children. A psychologist who completes forensic exams will describe his role in assessment. A PhD criminal justice professor will describe the problems in an urban area, and a forensic pharmacologist will update the audience on pharmacology needs in the prison population. In addition, a nurse lawyer will describe some of the legalities working with psychiatric forensic population.

Highlights from the Conference may be found here.
