Resources for FNP Students
Professional Organizations
Multiple professional organizations exist for Nurses. The American Nurses Association is the national nursing organization. Most states have state nursing organizations. There are two national organizations for Advance Practice Nurses. They are:
The American College of Nurse Practitioners: http://www.acnpweb.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=1
American Academy of Nurse Practitioners: http://www.aanp.org/default.asp
In addition to these two APN organizations there are national specialty organization for women’s health NP’s, pediatric nurse practitioners, geriatric nurse practitioners and others
Most states have APN organizations. In Tennessee that organization is: http://www.tnaonline.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=27
Local NP/APN groups are found in most areas. They often meet monthly, often at local restaurants and offer speakers on clinical topics. The Memphis area group web page is: http://www.memphisapns.org/
State Board of Nurse Examiners
In the majority of states the state board of nursing regulates advance practice. In some states this authority is shared with the state board of medicine. Individual state board of nursing links can be found at The National Council of State Boards of Nursing web site. https://www.ncsbn.org/index.htm . The Tennessee State Board of Nursing information can be found at: http://health.state.tn.us/Boards/Nursing/index.htm
Certification Examination Information
Two organizations offer Family Nurse Practitioner national certification examinations.
Both generally have the same format and requirements; however differences in recertification requirements, costs and policies for unsuccessful students vary. Be sure to investigate all of the parameters before deciding on an examination.

Conferences
Multiple regional state national and international conferences are available for advance practice nurses to earn continuing education credits, network and professional activities. The conference schedule is very dynamic. Several sites and journals have current listing of conferences and links to the conference information. Check you local, regional and state organizations for listing of conference details. http://www.medscape.com/nurses/conferences?src=mp
Certification Review Materials
FNP Certification examination review materials are very popular and diverse. Books, tapes and courses are available. Each student learns differently and should select materials that are best suited to their learning styles. When choosing books or tapes be sure to check for a current copyright dates as they should be no older than 5 years. I recommend that the text have rational for both the right and wrong answers. I also recommend that they include a CD with practice tests and diagnostic data. One to 2 day review courses are also popular. The two organizations that offer review classes that past students have found helpful are Advance Practice Education Association (APEA) (www.apea.com) and Fitzgerald Health Education Associates (http://www.fhea.com ).
