Family Nursing

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Family Nursing

The DNP in Family Nursing program is designed to prepare the registered nurse as an Advanced Practice Nurse with specialized knowledge and skills to provide primary care for patients. As a primary care provider, the Family Nurse Practitioner's (FNP) focus includes comprehensive health assessment, follow-up care for health problems, and health promotion or disease management activities. Coursework assists students to develop an expertise in primary care across the life span through the use of case studies, practicum experiences, and preceptored experiences with Advanced Practice Nurses. Students who successfully complete the DNP in Family Nursing program are eligible to take national certification examinations that qualify them to assume roles as primary care providers in the community. Graduates are expected to contribute to the delivery of quality health care through their implementation of evidence-based care and their ability to foster independence in an individual’s management of health.

The College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has been preparing nurses for advanced and expert practice for over 100 years. Degree options include DNP pathways for APNs with current FNP credentials and for those wishing to obtain FNP certification.
