Sarah L. Mynatt, EdD, APRN, BC earned her bachelor's and master's degree at the College of Nursing, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She is certified as a Clinical Specialist in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing and holds APN status with prescriptive privileges in Tennessee. She earned her doctorate in education at the University of Memphis where she focused on curriculum and instruction and adult learners. She holds the rank of professor and has been the Option Coordinator for the Psychiatric Mental Health Option Doctor of Nursing Science at the College of Nursing from 1998 until July 2007.
Prior to coming to the College of Nursing she had teaching experience in AD and BSN education. Since coming to the CoN she has taught in the MSN, DNSc, and new DNP programs. She also serves on PhD dissertation committees. Her research area of interest includes women with depression and substance use disorders, women of color with depression and the integration of psychiatric care into primary care.
Her practice focuses on the assessment and management of clients with mood and anxiety disorders and brief therapy that includes an emphasis on educating clients about their disorders. Clients are also seen at the nursing Health Education Lifestyle Promotion Center, HELP Center. Currently she is a counselor for the Student Assistance Program.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating the online psychiatric curriculum and participating in integrating psychiatric content into primary care and other nursing options. She has served as a board member and other offices in the Tennessee Nurses Association throughout her career. Other organizations in which she is active are Beta Theta Tau Chapter-at-Large Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses.

Comprehensive Advanced Education Psychiatric Nursing Program

Purpose: To implement a psychiatric nursing curriculum for clinical doctorate students based on the principle shared by public health and primary care that mental health (behavioral health) is an integral component of overall health and well-being. The program broadens advanced practice psychiatric nursing to include behavioral health skills to sustain integration of behavioral health services into primary care and other settings.

Role/Function/Responsibilities: I provide confidential counseling to students who are in crisis at UTHSC. The maximum sessions for a student is 5 but students rarely need more than two or three.
