Patricia Cunningham, DNSc, has been a College of Nursing faculty member at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center since 1992. Dr. Cunningham is dually certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Adult Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and as a Family Nurse Practitioner contributing to the evolution of the education and role of the Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse. Dr. Cunningham’s area of interest is the assessment and treatment of mood disorders, and the integration of psychiatric/mental health care in primary care settings.

Dr. Cunningham received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Temple University in 1977; her Master of Science in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing from Indiana University in 1984; her post-master’s preparation as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1994 from the University of Tennessee College of Nursing, and graduated in the first class of the University of Tennessee College of Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Science program in 2001. In her years teaching at the College of Nursing, Pat has been the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, Outstanding Teacher Award, and The Golden Apple Award. In 2001, Pat received the Psychiatric Nursing Award from the Tennessee Nurses Association and the Faculty Alumni Award from the University of Tennessee College of Nursing. Pat is a member of the Tennessee Nurses Association, and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.

Current Faculty Practice Responsibilities

Psychiatric CNS/Family Nurse Practitioner at the Center for Health Evaluation and Lifestyle Promotion, Memphis, TN (10-20% effort)
Responsible for accessing and treating mood disorders in referred patients.
Population Served: Patients from Family Medicine who choose to continue care with me. Patients referred by Nurse Colleagues.
