Dr. Coker has been a member of the nursing society since graduation from the Northeast Mississippi Community College in 1980. Following completion of his studies here, he continued his education at the University of North Alabama and received his BSN in 1983. After graduation, he gained clinical expertise in critical care nursing and nursing administration at The Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1987, he pursued his interest in nurse anesthesia and entered the Washington University Nurse Anesthesia Program in St. Louis, Missouri. Following completion of nurse anesthesia school in 1989, he returned to The Regional Medical Center in Memphis. Upon his return, Dr. Coker worked in the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center and gained experience in the delivery of anesthesia care to the trauma patient. In 1993, following his trauma anesthesia practice, he transferred to the obstetrical anesthesia department. Dr. Coker remains here today and serves the department as the Lead/Chief CRNA. While in the obstetrical-anesthesia division, he has gained valuable experience in the delivery of care to the high-risk obstetrical patient.

Noted academic accomplishments following his formal nurse anesthesia education include the following: (1) MSN from the University of Tennessee Health Science (UTHSC) in 2001 and (2) DNSc from the UTHSC in 2002. Dr. Coker has been affiliated with the UTHSC since 1999; he has served as both clinical faculty and as a clinical site coordinator for the nurse anesthesia students. In addition to his clinical contributions to UTHCS, Dr. Coker also serves as an assistant professor within the College of Nursing. His primary responsibilities include the didactic instruction of the OB Pathophysiology and the Regional Anesthesia courses. Dr. Coker holds membership within the following professional organizations: (1) ANA, (2) AANA, and (3) Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing.

Current Faculty Practice Responsibilities

Clinical Faculty at the Birthplace - Regional Medical Center at Memphis, Memphis, TN (60% effort)
Oversees, as well as facilitates, the students’ clinical experiences in the obstetrical anesthesia arena. Assures that the student meets clinical obligations as set forth by the AANA.
Population Served: As clinical faculty, I provide clinical instruction for student nurse anesthetists. My instruction centers around the delivery of anesthesia care for the obstetric patient in need of labor analgesia, as well as patients’ who require surgical anesthesia for operative delivery of the neonate.
