MSN Minimum Requirements

If you are invited into the MSN program and choose to come.

A variety of program requirements must be fulfilled prior to beginning class. These include but are not limited to . (1) completion of a criminal background check, (2) ensuring that all immunizations are current, (3) ensuring that you have adequate health insurance, (4) acquiring a laptop PC, (5) completing a set of preparatory technology exercises, and others. Full program requirements - which vary from program to program - will be provided to all those who are accepted into the program.

2. Degree Requirement

  • Bachelor degree in nursing must be from a program accredited by a national organization (NLNAC or CCNE) responsible for nursing accreditation.

3. Official Transcripts

  • “Official” transcripts from every college/university you have attended must be collected by you …
  • Official transcripts must be submitted to Enrollment Services as part of “Paper-packet component

4. Grade Point Average*

  • Only applicants with cumulative GPA ≥ 3.0 based on all collegiate work or cumulative GPA ≥ 3.2 earned during applicant’s most recently completed degree program will be considered for admission.
  • GPA calculation for most recently completed degree will be based only grades earned at degree-granting institution.
  • Applicants may submit additional documents to demonstrate professional scholarship and leadership abilities that could make them more competitive.

5. RN License

  • Copy of currently-held, unencumbered TN RN license, or currently-held unencumbered authority-to-practice as RN via multi-state licensure compact, or RN license from another state, if all clinical work during academic program will take place in that state
  • Copy of RN license to be submitted to Enrollment Services as part of “Paper-packet component

6. Recommendation Forms

  • Applicant must provide names and email addresses of three references
  • Recommendation Forms will be emailed to references when your application is submitted
  • References asked to complete and submit “Recommendation Forms” online to Enrollment Services
  • One Rec Form should be completed by faculty member who can address your academic ability

7. Certifications

  • In CPR or Advanced Life Support prior to UTHSC enrollment …
  • and maintained throughout UTHSC enrollment
  • Copy of certification submitted in “Paper-packet component

8. Laptop Required & Essential Computer Skills

  • Must own a web-connected laptop
  • Computer/web-based literacy skills expected

9. Professional Goals Essay

  • Essay describing professional goals, etc.
  • Must be submitted online as part of “Web-based component” of application process

3-5 pages

10. If Native Tongue not English (minimum TOEFL scores required)

  • Evidence of English proficiency is mandatory part of application process
  • Official minimum TOEFL Score earned within 2 years prior to application to College of Nursing
  • Official scores must be submitted as part of “Paper-packet component

11. Experience Requirements

  • Two options, CRNA and NNP, have experience requirements:
    • CRNA – 1 yr ICU experience prior to application deadline.
    • NNP – 2 yrs Level III NICU experience prior to application deadline.
  • Two options, FNP and ACNP, do not have experience requirements (entry directly from BSN allowed)
