Research Interests
Currently the laboratory has two interests. One area focuses on
the role of various caspases in apoptotic death of neuronal cell types. Neuronal
cell death underlies many neurodegenerative diseases. A better understanding of
which caspases are involved in the process of neuronal cell death will allow the
identification of new targets for drug development. The second area focuses on
human genetic studies aimed at determining whether genetic polymorphisms in
specific candidate genes involved in the regulation of lung function or innate
immunity are associated with severity of illness in pneumonia or sepsis.
