SEMINAR PROGRAMS

Departmental Seminar Series

The Department conducts multiple seminar programs, each tailored to meet particular needs of students and faculty. The Department of Microbiology & Immunology Seminar Series is a diverse program of invited speakers from other research intensive institutions. The exchange of ideas emanating from this series is essential to keeping faculty and students up-to-date on the latest research tools and results. Not only are these seminars more immediate than published materials, but they offer UT faculty and students the advantage of one-on-one interaction with nationally and internationally recognized researchers.

Faculty Seminar Series

A strong interdepartmental seminar series offers students and faculty alike an excellent opportunity of keeping abreast of what is going on within departmental laboratories and in sister departments at UT as well as throughout Memphis at institutions such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Journal Clubs & Joint Lab Meetings

Many laboratories within the Department of Microbiology & Immunology as well as investigators in various UT departments with common interests hold joint laboratory meetings and journal clubs as an informal forum for the discussion of specialized research information. Discussion and interpretation of data generated by faculty and students along with brain-storming are the focus of these meetings.

Graduate Student Seminar Series

This seminar series was established specifically to develop the public speaking skills of our graduate students. Students begin in their first year to give seminars to the Department. Several faculty, chosen by the graduate student presenters, evaluate the student’s presentations pointing out problems, areas that require greater clarity, and offer tips towards achieving more effective communication. There seminars also give students repeated opportunities to think-on-their-feet and to defend their ideas and interpretations of data. The ultimate goal of all of the seminar series is to provide a constant stream of new ideas with continuing opportunities to sharpen the skills and thinking of students and faculty alike.
