  • LIFE: Life insurance in the amount of $32,500, with a double indemnity clause for accidental death or dismemberment, is provided.
  • HEALTH: Residents, their spouses and dependent minor children are provided with a major medical policy, with a lifetime benefit of $1 million. For individual coverage, the resident pays $20/month. For family coverage, the resident pays $78/month. For benefits, there is a $250 deductible per person per year, up to a maximum of three family members. The plan provides for a co-pay and prescription card. There is no waiting period for maternity coverage. One hundred percent coverage with no deductible is provided for outpatient surgery and pre-admission testing. Outpatient psychiatric service coverage is 50% of costs, up to $50 per visit. Inpatient psychiatric coverage has a $20,000 per year limitation.
  • SALARY AND BENEFITS DISABILITY: UT provides disability coverage which may include complications of pregnancy and provides a minimum or $1,000/month in long-term disability, up to age 65. Coverage begins 90 days after the disability occurs. In most cases, the residency program will pay the salary of a resident who is unable to work because of illness or accident until the disability insurance takes effect. Residents may purchase additional coverage at a discounted rate.
  • MALPRACTICE: Liability coverage is provided by the State of Tennessee as a result of the Tennessee Claims Commission Act of 1985. Residents have absolute immunity, with the state acting as litigant on their behalf in any malpractice suit.

Leave Policy

One month (or 4 weeks) of absence is allowed each year for leave (vacation, sick, and parental leave). Any more than one month in any year of training will likely require make-up training time past the traditional 4 year training program in order to be board-eligible in either internal medicine or pediatrics. Vacation leave is essential and should not be forfeited or postponed in any year of training and cannot be used to reduce the total required training period. Specifics should be discussed with the program director in detail.

Day Care Facility

The University of Tennessee ChildCare Program is located on the first floor of the Boling Center, just two blocks from Le Bonheur and The Med. The program can accommodate 20 infants, ages 6 weeks to 12 months, and approximately 60 children, ages 12 months to 5 years. The facility is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and parents are strongly encouraged to drop in anytime. A comfortable, private room is provided for nursing mothers.
