Microbial Pathogenesis, Immunology, and Inflammation Electives

Students in the Microbial Pathogenesis, Immunology, and Inflammation (MPII) Track are required to take the following three elective courses:

• MSCI 931 - Immunity and Inflammation (2 credits; offered in Spring semester every year)
• MSCI 932 – Viral Pathogenesis (2 credits; offered in Fall semester every other year, alternating with MSCI 933)
• MSCI 933 – Molecular Basis of Bacterial Pathogenesis (2 credits; offered in Fall semester every other year, alternating with MSCI 932)

These three courses satisfy the 6-hour elective course requirement for IPBS students; however, in consultation with their thesis advisor, students may wish to take additional elective courses to broaden their knowledge base. Additional electives include

• MSCI 814 – Bioinformatics I (2 credits)
• MSCI 815 – Bioinformatics II (1 credit)
• MSCI 840 – Special Topics (1 credit)
• MSCI 861 – Cell Signaling (2 credits)
• MSCI 911 – Applied Proteomics (2 credits)
• MSCI 928 – Principles of Mass Spectrometry (2 credits)
• MSCI 929 – Techniques in Molecular Biology (4 credits)

Beginning in the second year, MPII students participate in the MPII Journal Club, which is a regularly scheduled meeting of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students to review current literature in a focused area of research such as immunology, microbial pathogenesis, or virology.

During the second year, students are also required to serve as teaching assistants in the laboratory portion of the medical microbiology course.

Beginning in the third year, MPII students present their own research in a formal seminar to the faculty, postdocs, and students. This provides an opportunity for students to hone their speaking skills and to obtain input on their research project.
