Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences

IPBS

The Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences is designed to maximize cross-disciplinary training and student flexibility. More than 150 participating faculty have accepted primary appointments in one of seven tracks that cover the spectrum of contemporary biomedical science. Most have also opted for secondary appointments in other tracks.

The result is a multi-tiered structure in which faculty members from several different traditional departments contribute to a single track, enhancing the interdisciplinary training of students.

The IPBS offers tremendous student flexibility. While some entering students know precisely where their research interests lie, others do not. The IPBS easily accommodates both.

Students do not formally declare a track affiliation at the time of entry. Instead, this decision is made after a series of laboratory rotations during the first year. Rotations may occur in laboratories belonging to any of the seven tracks, or students may choose to focus more narrowly on laboratories belonging to a single track.

During the first year all students take a core curriculum providing a foundation in cell, molecular, and systems biology, and many students will opt to enroll in additional elective courses in their areas of interest. Still others may wait until they have selected a track and Research Advisor.

The choice is up to the student.
