The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (Memphis) invites applications and nominations for the
position of Dean, College of Dentistry. The Health Science Center’s College of Dentistry is seeking
nationally-recognized candidates with demonstrated administrative experience that includes a record of
teaching and scholarship. Candidates should have proven leadership ability demonstrating a professional
record that meshes with the Health Science Center’s mission of education, research, clinical care and
public service.
The Dean is the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer of the College of Dentistry and reports to the
Chancellor and Vice President of Health Affairs. The Dean ensures the academic integrity of all educational
programs; encourages excellence in teaching; fosters and supports research, public service, and clinical
care; oversees the fiscal well being of the cost center and is responsible for alumni relations and
solicitation of major gifts for the College. Candidates must possess:
- a background of senior administrative responsibilities;
- distinguished accomplishments in dental education and clinical care;
- a strong commitment to working with organized dentistry and sufficient clinical experience to relate effectively to the practitioner community;
- a history of achievement in academic leadership;
- a record of integrity and fairness;
- the ability to relate well to students, faculty and alumni;
- a commitment to implementing modern technology in dental education; and
- a clear understanding of the appropriate role and scope of the College of Dentistry in a statewide, publicly funded academic health science center.
The candidate will also possess outstanding academic credentials, the D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree, from an
institution accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. This should
include appropriate professional recognition, eligibility for licensure in Tennessee, strong commitments to
the spirit of affirmative action, equal opportunity and diversity, and experience working with dental alumni
in meeting the needs of constituent communities.
The College is dedicated to provide professional, graduate, and postgraduate education, conduct dental
research, and deliver state-of-the-art patient care and public service. The College maintains a 4-year
dental program leading to the D.D.S. degree with approximately 320 students enrolled. In addition, it
has an advanced education program in General Dentistry and postgraduate programs leading to certification
in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontology, Pediatric Dentistry and Prosthodontics also
encompassing students and Dental Hygiene.
The UTHSC College of Dentistry was founded in 1878 making it the oldest dental college in the South, and
the third oldest public college of dentistry in the United States. It is located in downtown Memphis,
Tennessee, in the Winfield C. Dunn Building at 875 Union Avenue.

administrative experience in higher education, including fiscal and budget management , fund-raising, human
