CONSIDERATION OF APPLICANTS
The following factors are considered during the selection process of each program:
1. General criteria for admission (not in any particular order):
a. Academic performance in college and dental school (including GPA and class rank where available)
b. Disciplinary or civil record
c. Extracurricular activities
d. Morals, character and integrity
e. Motivation and goals
f. National Board scores
g. Participation in organized dentistry
h. Personal statements in the application
i. Scores on the Graduate Record Examination (Orthodontics only)
2. Letters of References
Four (4) letters of references are required, including one from the Dean's office indicating cumulative GPA and class rank (such information is provided by the dental school), and at least one must be from a full-time faculty member from the applicant's dental school.
3. Personal Interview
Interviews are required prior to acceptance, and are arranged by invitation after a review of the applications; not all applicants are invited to interview. Interview methods utilized include one-on-one and/or group interviews with faculty, and interview by students presently enrolled in the program. Special attention is paid to demeanor, professionalism, interest and creativity of responses.
MISREPRESENTATION OF ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS
Misrepresentation of academic credentials is a Class A misdemeanor in Tennessee. A person commits the offense of misrepresentation of academic credentials who, knowing that the statement is false and with the intent to secure employment at or admission to an institution of higher education in Tennessee, represents, orally or in writing, that such person: (1) has successfully completed the required course work for and has been awarded one or more degrees or diplomas from an accredited institution of higher education; (2) has successfully completed the required course work for and has been awarded one or more degrees or diplomas from a particular institution of higher education; or (3) has successfully completed the required course work for and has been awarded one or more degrees or diplomas in a particular field or specialty from an accredited institution of higher education.
FOREIGN STUDENT APPLICANTS
Based upon the authority given to UTHSC by the Department of Homeland Security, INS Program #MEM0058 for the issuance of F-1 student visas, highly qualified foreign students may be admitted to advanced dental education programs in the College of Dentistry. Foreign students must meet the same criteria for admission as U.S. citizens, must demonstrate competency in written and spoken English by submitting scores from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination, and must demonstrate financial resources adequate to complete their education at UTHSC. Stipends are not available to foreign students.
The foreign applicant must understand that the selection of students is highly competitive and preference is given to graduates of ADA (American Dental Association) accredited schools in the USA and Canada, and to applicants affiliated with the State and/or University of Tennessee. If admitted, foreign students are accepted on a provisional basis; student standing will be reviewed after the first semester. Foreign applicants should be aware that, at the present time, state law does not provide for the licensure of students who received their dental training in a foreign dental school. Thus, it is not possible for a foreign student to be licensed in the State of Tennessee after graduation from an advanced dental education program without first graduating from an ADA accredited dental training program and obtaining a DDS, or DMD degree.
All applicants to the Pediatric Dentistry Program must be graduates of a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association and must be citizens of the United States at the time of application.
