Course Description:
This
course provides an overview of the nature, production, characteristics and
biological effects of X-rays. It covers the characteristics of conventional and
handheld dental x-ray machines, their operational safety and regulations
pertaining the use of such machines. In addition, it also provides an overview
of the paralleling and bisecting angle techniques for intraoral radiography and
panoramic radiography with an aim of reducing retake frequency to reduce patient
exposure.
Course Objectives:
- Basic
nature, characteristics and various uses of X-rays.
- Production
and quantitative and qualitative control of X-rays.
- Major
mechanisms involved in biological response to X-rays.
- X-ray
safety and safe operating procedures.
- Basic
factors in patient and operator radiation protection.
- Radiation
doses associated with intraoral and extraoral radiographic procedures and
background radiation.
- Radiation
doses associated with dental radiography.
- Federal,
State and major NCRP radiation regulations.
- Paralleling
and bisecting angle techniques for intraoral radiography and correct
positioning and positioning errors in panoramic radiography.

Chaudhry, DDS, MDSc
Dr.
Jahanzeb Chaudhry is an assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial radiology
at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry and College of Medicine.
He also serves as the director of the division of oral and maxillofacial
radiology at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. He is a
certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist and has completed his radiology
training at the Unversity of Connecticut Health Science Center and received a
Master of Dental Science degree from the University of Connecticut Graduate
School. Dr. Chaudhry is an active member of the American Academy of Oral
and Maxillofacial Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, American
Dental Education Association and European Society of Radiology. He is
actively involved in udergraduate and graduate teaching and practice of oral and
maxillofacial radiology.
Bryan Lemieux, CHP
Bryan
Lemieux is the Radiation Safety Officer for the University of Tennessee Health
Science Center where he is also an assistant instructor in the department of
Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is a Certified Health Physicist (CHP)
with several years of experience in medical health physics. Bryan holds a
Masters degree in Radiological Sciences from the University of Massachusetts at
Lowell. He is also an active member of the Health Physics Society.
