Course Description:
Publications
in recent years have expanded our horizon and knowledge regarding the roles of
risk factors in the etiology of periodontal diseases and the effects of oral
health status on systemic diseases. A great effort was placed in the past on the
impacts of systemic diseases on the periodontium. Diabetes and pregnancy are
good examples for this link. However, current data suggest a two-way pathway of
interaction and that periodontitis may influence the course and outcomes of
systemic diseases. A new field of research in dentistry “periodontal
medicine” is exploring this link. The first part of this course will present
the current data on the oral-systemic disease connection and the role of risk
factors in modulating the course of periodontitis.
The second part of this course will focus on the role of periodontics in
cosmetic dentistry: Patients’ expectations from dentistry have changed
significantly in recent years. The demand for a youthful look and a pleasing
smile has become a standard. Current trends in cosmetic dentistry have a great
impact on the daily practice of periodontics. This course, designed for the
entire dental team, will help you meet some of your patients’ expectations in
the “cosmetic zone”. A conservative, non-surgical treatment approach for
patients with mild and moderate periodontitis will be presented, along with
cosmetic crown lengthening that eliminates “gummy” smile and
inadequate clinical crowns prior to placement of porcelain veneers, along with
ridge augmentation, root coverage and reconstruction of the interdental
papillae.
