Course Description:
Explore the world of forensics through the eyes of two
active members of the forensic community, Dr. Bill Bass and Dr. Ned Turner. This
course will provide an overview of forensic anthropology and odontology and
focus on identification of unknown remains, bitemark evidence, human abuse, and
mass disasters. Dr. Bass will also
discuss the anthropological aspects of forensic investigations including some of
the more notable cases on which he has worked.
As part of his presentation, he will present information on the recent
exhumation of J. P. Richardson (“the Big Bopper”) who died in a plane crash
with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens 50 years ago.

Dr. Bill Bass is a world-renowned forensic
anthropologist and founder the University of Tennessee's Anthropology Research
Facility often referred to as “The Body Farm.”
Additionally he has authored or co-authored numerous scientific
publications, as well as a highly acclaimed memoir about his career, Death’s
Acre. Additional fiction and
non-fiction books which he has co-authored include Beyond the Body Farm, Carved
in Bone, The Devil’s Bones and his newest novel Bones of Betrayal.
Dr. Bass is a professor emeritus at the University of Tennessee,
Knoxville.
Dr. Ned Turner is an Associate Professor at the
University of Tennessee College of Dentistry.
He has 19 years experience in the field of forensics and is a member of
numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Forensic
Sciences and the American Society of Forensic Odontology, and a member of the
Disaster Morturary Operational Response Team.
He is also a consulting scientist to the Shelby County Regional Forensic
Center
