Course Description:
This
seminar will address basic pathophysiological principles that provide a
foundation for preoperative assessment and management of acute complications.
Attention is given to the most commonly prescribed medications, which clue the
dentist to the nature and severity of specific diseases, and their potential for
interactions with medications used in dental practice. When acute complications
arise, a systematic algorithm approach to treatment will be presented including
proper airway management, equipment and appropriate emergency drugs.
Topics:
u
Preoperative Assessment and Medical Consultation
u
Primary Assessment and Airway Management for Emergencies
u
Essential Emergency Drugs
u
Emergency Treatment Algorithms
Objectives:
1.
Describe basic principles of preoperative assessment, including protocols
for medical consultation.
2.
Explain basic pathophysiological features of common disease states.
3.
Identify drug classes and/or preparations having potential for drug
interactions with medications used in dental practice.
4.
Explain the components of a thorough primary assessment of a patient
experiencing an adverse event.
5.
Describe essential adjuncts for providing oxygen supplementation and
positive pressure ventilation.
