Medical Urgencies and Emergencies

"Preoperative Assessment and Management of Acute Complications"

Course Description:

This seminar will address basic pathophysiological principles that provide a foundation for preoperative assessment and management of acute complications. Attention is given to the most commonly prescribed medications, which clue the dentist to the nature and severity of specific diseases, and their potential for interactions with medications used in dental practice. When acute complications arise, a systematic algorithm approach to treatment will be presented including proper airway management, equipment and appropriate emergency drugs.

Objectives:

1.         Describe basic principles of preoperative assessment, including protocols for medical consultation.

2.         Explain basic pathophysiological features of common disease states.

3.         Identify drug classes and/or preparations having potential for drug interactions with medications used in dental practice.

4.         Explain the components of a thorough primary assessment of a patient experiencing an adverse event.

5.         Describe essential adjuncts for providing oxygen supplementation and positive pressure ventilation.

6.         Describe appropriate algorithms for managing urgencies and emergencies that may present during dental treatment.

Presented by:

Dan Becker, DDS received a BS in Zoology at Ohio University and his DDS from Ohio State University in 1972.  He is currently Professor of Allied Health Sciences at Sinclair Community College and Associate Director of Education for the General Practice Dental Residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.  In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Becker provides IV sedation services for dental practices throughout the Dayton-Cincinnati area.

Dr. Becker has published numerous articles in scientific journals and has authored chapters in several textbooks.  He has lectured for organizations, colleges and universities throughout North America on topics related to pharmacology, conscious sedation, medical assessment and medical emergencies.  He is noted for his pragmatism and his ability to convert otherwise "dry" material into formats that are both entertaining and informative.
