Competency Statements
1. BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES A new dental graduate must be competent in the application of the fundamental principles of behavioral science as tools for promoting, improving and maintaining oral health.
2. DIVERSITY & COMMUNICATION SKILLS A new dental graduate must be competent in managing a diverse patient population and have the interpersonal and communication skills to function successfully in a multicultural work environment.
3. HEALTH CARE DELIVERY A new dental graduate must be competent in evaluating different models of oral health care management and delivery.
4. PROFESSIONALISM A new dental graduate must be competent in identifying and applying legal, ethical and professional principles as they pertain to the practice of dentistry.
5. CRITICAL THINKING A new dental graduate must be competent in the use of critical thinking and problem solving related to the comprehensive care of patients.
6. INFORMATICS A new dental graduate must be competent in accessing and acquiring relevant dental practice information from multiple sources, including traditional library materials and contemporary electronic media.
7. ASSESSMENT OF PATIENTS A new dental graduate must be competent in assessing oral health.
8. DIAGNOSIS A new dental graduate must be competent in determining differential and definitive diagnoses of oral and maxillofacial conditions.
9. COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT PLANNING A new dental graduate must be competent in developing a comprehensive, integrated, sequenced individual treatment plan based on evaluation of diagnostic information gathered during assessment of the patient.
10. PREVENTION A new dental graduate must be competent in providing patients with preventive therapy including the skills and motivation needed for proper home care.
11. INFECTION CONTROL A new dental graduate must be competent in applying current infection control principles.
12. INFORMED CONSENT A new dental graduate must be competent in obtaining informed consent.
13. PAIN MANAGEMENT A new dental graduate must be competent in managing pain and anxiety for their patients.
14. RESTORATION OF TEETH A new dental graduate must be competent in restoring teeth to proper form and function.
15. REPLACEMENT OF TEETH A new dental graduate must be competent in designing and placing dental prostheses.
16. LABORATORY A new dental graduate must be competent in directing laboratory technicians to fabricate dental laboratory products that fulfill established criteria and assessing the acceptability of products returned from a dental laboratory.
17. PERIODONTAL THERAPY A new dental graduate must be competent in performing anti-infective periodontal therapy, including scaling and root planing and monitoring their effectiveness.
18. PULPAL THERAPY A new dental graduate must be competent in managing pulpal and periapical disease.
19. ORAL MUCOSAL DISORDERS A new dental graduate must be competent in recognizing and managing oral mucosal diseases and abnormalities.
20. SURGERY A new dental graduate must be competent in performing surgical and non-surgical extraction of erupted teeth or residual root tip(s).
21. DENTAL EMERGENCIES A new dental graduate must be competent in assessing and managing dental emergencies.
22. MALOCCLUSION A new dental graduate must be competent in classifying and managing malocclusions.
23. SPACE MANAGEMENT A new dental graduate must be competent in arch analysis and space management.
24. TREATMENT OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT A new dental graduate must be competent in documenting and evaluating the results of treatment, and recognizing deficiencies.
25. LIFE SUPPORT A new dental graduate must be competent in providing life support for medical emergencies, including implementation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
