Dr. Kang, Goodman Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry at UTHSC, personally has a total of over 200 publications spanning many fields. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals. He served a pivotal role in determining policy as a member of the Publication Committee of the American College of Rheumatology for 6 years, 3 of which he served as Chairman. He has served on four different study sections of the National Institutes of Health and the Arthritis Foundation. He has also served on major NIH advisory committees including the National Arthritis Advisory Board and the Arteriosclerosis, Hypertension, and Lipid Metabolism Advisory Committee. He contributed his expertise in the guidance of American College of Rheumatology as a member of the Board of Directors. In 1982 he became chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Tennessee and in 1989 assumed the Goodman Chair. Dr. Kang is an accomplished protein chemist with extensive experience in the biochemistry and immuology of connective tissue molecules. His clinical experience in this area is enhanced by years of research in the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of disorders of the connective tissues such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Scleroderma. Dr. Kang directs the operation of an active group of basic science research laboratories in Memphis at both the University of Tennessee and the Veterans Affairs Hospital.
