DCM Presentations & Publications


Members of the Department of Comparative Medicine have been and will be busy presenting research projects at meetings this summer and fall. The American Veterinary Medical Association, 136th Annual Convention was held July 10-14th inNew Orleans, LA. Drs. Timothy Mandrell and Naomi Gades attended presenting a poster entitled "Nonendoscopic Placement and Use of Percutaneous Gastrostomy Tubes in Pigs (Sus scrofa )." This technique was adapted from a small animal procedure in order to assist in developing a pig model of pediatric iron toxicity. This study was done in collaboration with Dr. Peter Chyka and the Memphis Poison Control Center. Additionally, Dr. Mandrell served as a moderator for the Laboratory Animal Medicine session-Allergy in the Workplace.

The Academy of Surgical Research held its annual meeting September 2-4th in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dr. Mildred Randolph attended and did a platform presentation entitled "Utilizing the Canine Model for Transrectal Intrapostatic Delivery of Gene Therapy." She has been working with Drs. Mitchell Steiner and Jeffrey Gingrich.

The 50th American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) National Meeting will be held in Indianapolis, IN, November 7-11. Drs. Timothy Mandrell and Naomi Gades will attend and present a poster entitled "An Anesthetic Technique for Multiple Branchoalveolar Lavage Procedures in Pigs (Sus scrofa)." This anesthetic technique was developed in collaboration with Drs. Scott Hanes and Christopher Wood, for a project requiring multiple bronchoalveolar lavage procedure to measure antibiotic concentrations in the lung after continuous and intermittent drug infusion.

The department has also had one publication accepted this summer. The manuscript "Diarrhea in Neonatal Rats," by NM Gades, WP Rogers, and TD Mandrell, which was a "What's Your Diagnosis?" presentation at the 1998 AALAS meeting in Cincinnati, OH, has been accepted by Contemporary Topic in Laboratory Animal Science for publication.
