Ether Use

Use of Ether

1. For Anesthesia:

Because of the serious hazard created by the highly flammable and properties of ether, together with the fact that satisfactory alternatives are available, it is generally recommended that ether not be used as an anesthetic agent. If ether must be used, documentation of approval for its use from the campus safety committee must be furnished since animal rooms are not equipped with appropriate ventilation hoods, ether must not be used in animal rooms.

2. For Euthanasia:

Ether must not be used as an euthanasia agent for the following reasons (1) Appropriate explosion proof refrigerators are not available to hold carcasses and (2) Ether saturated carcasses create a potentially serious hazard when they are incinerated.
