Mission Statement
Purpose: The
University of Tennessee College of Medicine is committed to serving the
state and region through programs of excellence in education, patient
care, research and other public service initiatives, which advance the
health of the general public. Continuing medical education provides
opportunities for the health care professional to continue the learning,
which began in the undergraduate curriculum, utilizing adult learning
principles and available technology.
Content Areas: The College of
Medicine Continuing Medical Education Program is part of a multi-campus
health science center with tertiary care responsibilities. Major
responsibilities of the CME Program are: to identify the educational needs
and interests of the medical community; to provide learning opportunities
for new knowledge and skills; to partner with other health care facilities
and educational institutions to promote public health; to strive to
heighten the health professional’s awareness of the need for compassion
in patient care and the dignity of human life. Various data sources
including past activity evaluation data, committee findings, literature
review, practice data, surveys, and new medical information are used to
develop the content of the CME activities aimed at helping health care
practitioners stay current enabling them to provide efficient,
compassionate, up-to-date and cost effective patient care.
Target Audience: The UT CME
Program operates offices in Memphis, Chattanooga and Knoxville to provide
assistance in planning, developing and providing activities to physicians
in Tennessee’s metropolitan and rural areas. The courses are
offered to health care providers at the regional and national level and
are often attended by other health care professionals.
Types of Activities Provided: To
maximize learning opportunities, a wide range of activities are offered
which include, formal courses, seminars, workshops, video
conferences/distance learning, mini-residencies, visiting professorships,

regulations of the University of Tennessee.
Expected Results: By
conducting CME activities that have been developed based upon varied needs
assessment methodology and in full compliance with ACCME standards and
